The United Nations General Assembly declared 2002 the International Year of Mountains to raise awareness of the global importance of mountain ecosystems. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) served as the lead agency coordinating the year’s observances.
The year’s campaign led to the creation of the Mountain Partnership at the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg.
