About HBO

HBO (Home Box Office) is an American premium television network launched on November 8, 1972 — the oldest continuously operating subscription television service in the United States. It began with uncut, commercial-free movies and live events, then reinvented itself with original programming: The Sopranos, The Wire, and Game of Thrones made “It’s not TV, it’s HBO” a cultural catchphrase. Now part of Warner Bros. Discovery, its three-letter logo is a landmark of minimalist brand design.

Logo Meaning and History

The bullseye inside the “O” was inspired by the tuning knobs on 1970s television sets — a literal invitation to tune in. Set in bold, tightly spaced capitals, the lettermark projects confidence and exclusivity. Its extreme simplicity made it easy to reproduce everywhere, while the bullseye added the one detail that keeps the mark from being just three letters.

Evolution

• 1972–1975: The original logo — a marquee light array around a “Home Box Office” nameplate, with a ticket stub.
• 1975–1980: The first lettermark by Time-Life art director Betty E. Brugger, introduced March 1, 1975: bold “HBO” with a bullseye in the “O”.
• 1980–present: A refined version with the “O” shifted an eighth of an inch rightward, introduced April 1980 and fully replacing the original by June 1981.
• 2008: An internal typeface adapted from ITC Avant Garde, with bullseye-like glyphs, developed for HBO Sports and later HBO Go.

Colors and Font

HBO has always been a black-and-white brand: white letters on black, or the reverse. The absence of colour keeps the focus on the programming and lets the logo sit quietly over any footage. The lettering is custom geometric sans-serif work, refined in 1980 by graphic artist Gerard Huerta, never a standard font.
