About Hyundai
Hyundai Motor Company is South Korea’s largest carmaker and one of the biggest automotive groups in the world. The Hyundai name began in 1947 as an engineering and construction firm founded by Chung Ju-Yung; the motor division was established in 1967, and its first model, the Cortina, followed in 1968. The Pony, released in 1975, was Korea’s first domestically mass-produced car. Hyundai now builds a full lineup — from the Elantra and Sonata to the Ioniq electric range — and is a FIFA World Cup sponsor. The name Hyundai means ‘modernity’ in Korean, fitting a company known for rapid innovation.
Logo Meaning and History
The Hyundai emblem is a stylized, forward-leaning letter H inside an oval. It is also a hidden picture: the H’s two vertical strokes represent two people shaking hands — a Hyundai representative and a satisfied customer — symbolizing trust and partnership. The enclosing oval stands for the company’s global reach and ambition. Early badges used a stylized ‘HD’; the handshake H made its debut in 1992 and has defined the brand ever since.
Evolution
- 1968 – Early cars wear a stylized ‘HD’ badge, carried over from the Cortina era.
- 1990 – Hyundai designers begin sketching a new emblem centered on a slanted H in an oval.
- 1992 – The iconic oval with the forward-leaning ‘handshake’ H is officially introduced.
- 1995 – The modern emblem appears on most Hyundai models worldwide as dealer signage is updated.
- 2000s – A metallic silver finish replaces flat dark blue, giving the badge a premium look.
- 2020s – The logo shifts to a simpler monochrome flat finish for the digital age.
