About PayPal

PayPal is an American multinational financial technology company headquartered in San Jose, California. Founded in December 1998 as Confinity by Peter Thiel, Max Levchin, and Luke Nosek, it merged with Elon Musk’s X.com in 2000, was renamed PayPal in 2001, and was acquired by eBay in 2002 for $1.5 billion. PayPal spun off as an independent company in 2015 and today lets hundreds of millions of users send money, shop online, and accept payments worldwide.

PayPal Logo Meaning and History

The PayPal logo is built around two overlapping letter P shapes that together suggest two people coming together, a theme drawn from the brand’s advertising about money bringing people closer. The double-P monogram, introduced in 2014 by Yves Béhar’s studio fuseproject, was the company’s first true standalone symbol and was designed to work at tiny sizes on mobile apps and checkout buttons. The two shades of blue are classic fintech colors, chosen to project trust, security, and reliability in digital payments.

Evolution of the PayPal Logo

• 1999: A simple wordmark set in a style similar to Verdana Bold Italic, basic and startup-appropriate.
• 2007: A refined wordmark established the two-blue color system, replacing the earlier plain version.
• 2012: Cleaner, rounder letterforms and a flatter, brighter look bridged the gap to the modern identity.
• 2014: Fuseproject’s comprehensive redesign introduced the double-P monogram, a redrawn custom wordmark, and formalized the dual-blue palette.
• 2024: Pentagram refreshed the identity with a black, geometric wordmark in a custom typeface, keeping blue as an accent color.

PayPal Logo Colors and Font

The classic PayPal logo uses Pay Blue #003087 and Pal Blue #009CDE, with a deep overlap blue #012169. Early wordmarks echoed Verdana Bold Italic; the 2014 wordmark was redrawn as a custom typeface, while the 2024 refresh uses the custom PayPal Pro face, based on Lineto’s LL Supreme, a modern redrawing of Futura.
