Napster launched in 1999 by Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker as a pioneering peer-to-peer music file-sharing service with 80 million users at its peak. Shut down in 2001 after record-industry copyright lawsuits; it permanently shifted music from physical to digital sales.

The brand was revived as a legal subscription streaming service, later merged with Rhapsody and acquired by Infinite Reality in 2025.
