Facebook is the social network that defined modern social media. Founded in February 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg at Harvard as “TheFacebook,” it grew from a college-only site into a global network of billions. It popularized the news feed and the like button, and today operates under Meta.
Its identity has always been one mark: a lowercase white “f” on blue. Zuckerberg reportedly chose blue because he is red-green colorblind and can distinguish it most easily. In two decades the logo has barely changed.
The 2005 Facebook wordmark was designed by Mike Buzzard of Cuban Council with type designer Eric Olson. Based on the bold sans-serif Klavika, it was customized into a wordmark that signaled Facebook was a serious company, not a dorm-room project.
In July 2015, the wordmark was refreshed for the first time in ten years. Working again with Olson, the team gave the “a” a single story, stemmed the “b,” and widened the spacing for mobile legibility. The trademark blue stayed untouched.
The palette is famously minimal: vivid blue with white. The brand blue is #1877F2, the brighter 2019 shade chosen for small screens, paired with white (#FFFFFF). Earlier versions used darker blues such as #4267B2. The wordmark is a customized Klavika, reworked with bespoke letterforms including the single-story “a” from 2015.
