About Ole Miss Rebels
The Ole Miss Rebels are the 18 men’s and women’s intercollegiate athletic teams of the University of Mississippi, located in Oxford, Mississippi. The football team began play in 1893, and the university became a charter member of the SEC in 1932. The name “Ole Miss” itself comes from the title of the university’s first student yearbook, published in 1897 after a naming contest won by student Elma Meek. Originally known as the “Mississippi Flood,” the teams were renamed the Rebels in 1936. The teams compete at the NCAA Division I FBS level.

In April 1936, the editor of the student newspaper, The Mississippian, ran a contest to choose a new nickname for Ole Miss athletics. From more than 200 entries, five finalists — including Rebels, Raiders, Confederates, and Stonewalls — were put to 21 sportswriters; “Rebels” won with 18 votes, alluding to the University Greys. The athletics committee approved it, and the name has stuck ever since. The script wordmark reflects Southern tradition.
