Burger King is the second-largest hamburger fast food chain in the world. It traces its roots to 1953 in Jacksonville, Florida, where it opened as Insta-Burger King, named after the Insta-Broiler cooking device. After financial trouble, franchisees David Edgerton and James McLamore bought the business and renamed it Burger King in 1954. The launch of the Whopper in 1957 turned it into a global icon, and the brand became famous for flame-grilled burgers and its bold, playful advertising.
The Burger King logo is a literal picture of its product: the brand name sandwiched between two halves of a sesame-seed-topped bun. Introduced in 1969, the “bun halves” design is one of the most clever word-in-product logos in fast food history, making the brand instantly recognizable even without explanation. The warm reds and oranges stimulate appetite, while the rounded shapes feel friendly and approachable. For more than fifty years, every major redesign has kept the bun concept intact.
The current Burger King palette is built from appetite-friendly colors: Flame red, burnt orange, and a warm bun-gold. The 2021 redesign dropped the artificial blue crescent in favor of natural food colors. The wordmark uses a custom typeface called Flame, a groovy semi-serif that echoes 1970s lettering and was designed to look almost edible.
