Burberry is a British luxury fashion house founded in 1856 by the drapier Thomas Burberry in Basingstoke, England. It began as a maker of outdoor clothing and earned its reputation through innovation: in 1879 Thomas Burberry invented gabardine, a breathable yet weatherproof fabric, and during the First World War the house’s coats were worn by British officers in the trenches, giving the trench coat its name.
Today Burberry is one of Britain’s most recognized luxury brands, known for its trench coats, signature check pattern, leather goods, and ready-to-wear.
Burberry’s first logo appeared in 1901, when the house held a public competition to design a new trademark. The winning entry, the Equestrian Knight Design, shows a knight on horseback charging forward, carrying a shield inscribed with the Latin word “Prorsum,” meaning “forwards.”
The knight symbolizes honor, protection, and nobility, while “Prorsum” expresses the company’s commitment to progress. The emblem appeared beneath the brand name in a bespoke serif wordmark, giving the identity its stately character.
Burberry’s identity centers on black (#000000), often reversed in white, against the signature beige of its iconic check, with accents of the check’s red and navy. The wordmark has historically been a bespoke Bodoni-style serif, briefly replaced by a sans-serif in 2018 before the 2023 return to serif lettering.
