Alwatan (Al-Watan) is a Saudi Arabic-language daily newspaper founded in 2000 and published from Abha in the Aseer region — uniquely headquartered outside the Kingdom’s major cities. Known for its relatively liberal editorial stance and strong reporting, Alwatan covers Saudi and regional news, culture, and opinion, building a loyal readership across the Kingdom. The paper has earned respect for quality journalism and has been a platform for prominent Saudi writers and intellectuals over its two-plus decades of publication. Published from Abha, the paper gives Saudi Arabia’s southern region a distinctive editorial voice. Its opinion pages have hosted some of Saudi Arabia’s most prominent columnists.
The Alwatan masthead — “Alwatan” meaning “the homeland” — is a distinguished Arabic calligraphic logo designed for newspaper authority and national pride. Arabic daily mastheads traditionally favor elegant, weighty lettering that conveys editorial seriousness, and Alwatan’s wordmark follows this tradition with a refined, recognizable treatment. The design has graced the paper’s front page and digital editions for over twenty years. The calligraphic masthead carries the weight of ‘the homeland’ — a name that is itself a statement of identity. The festival’s visual identity has become an annual symbol of Saudi entertainment. Millions of visitors attend the festival each season.
