Subway is the world’s largest submarine sandwich chain by number of locations. It was founded in 1965 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, when 17-year-old Fred DeLuca borrowed $1,000 from family friend Peter Buck to open a sandwich shop and help pay for college. The first shop was called Pete’s Super Submarines. Subway built its empire on franchising and fresh, made-to-order sandwiches, growing to tens of thousands of restaurants in more than 100 countries. Roark Capital acquired the company in 2023.
The logo’s most famous feature is the pair of arrows extending from the first S and the last Y. The arrows symbolize entry and exit, like a subway station, reinforcing the brand name. They also suggest movement, choice, and customization, which became central to Subway’s identity as a place where every sandwich is built to order. The green and yellow color scheme was chosen to signal freshness and healthy ingredients.
Subway’s identity runs on green and yellow. Green stands for freshness, health, and vegetables; yellow brings warmth, energy, and appetite. The wordmark is set in a modified ITC Bauhaus-style geometric sans-serif, with the 2016 version returning to upright lettering for a cleaner digital look.
