Academy Sports + Outdoors is an American sporting-goods retail chain founded in 1938 in San Antonio, Texas, by Max Gochman. He opened the Academy Tire Shop across the street from St. Henry’s Academy — the Catholic high school that gave the business its name. After a few years Gochman began selling military surplus, and the business evolved into Academy Super Surplus before shifting to sporting goods in the 1980s. Family-owned for 74 years, the company was acquired by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts in 2011 and listed on NASDAQ in October 2020 under the ticker ASO. Today it operates more than 300 stores across 21 states with annual revenue above $6 billion.
The “Academy” name is a direct link to the company’s origin across from St. Henry’s Academy in San Antonio — the school’s name outlived the tire shop that borrowed it. The modern identity pairs it with a “+” and “Outdoors,” reflecting the chain’s position as a full-line sporting goods and outdoor recreation retailer, with an active styling to match its “Fun for All” mission.
The Academy brand leans on a bold navy-blue wordmark with red accents — an athletic, all-American palette built for storefronts, jerseys and broadcast. The sturdy letterforms read clearly from the parking lot to the smartphone screen.
