About Alenia Aerospazio
Alenia Aerospazio was an Italian aerospace company formed in 1990 through the merger of Aeritalia and Selenia, both previously part of the state-owned IRI group. Based in Italy, it became a core subsidiary of Finmeccanica (today’s Leonardo) and one of Europe’s leading aerospace manufacturers. The company participated in major international programs including the Eurofighter Typhoon, the ATR regional aircraft family (a joint venture with Airbus), and various satellite and defense projects. In the 2010s Alenia’s aerospace activities were progressively integrated into Leonardo, ending the Alenia Aerospazio name as a standalone brand. Its engineers contributed to the ATR turboprop family, one of the most successful regional aircraft programs in history. The company’s facilities across Italy employed thousands of engineers at the height of its operations.
