About Airbus
Airbus SE is a European aerospace corporation and the world’s largest manufacturer of commercial airliners. It originated as Airbus Industrie GIE, a consortium of European aerospace companies established on December 18, 1970, to build a wide-body aircraft to rival American airliners. Led by France’s Aérospatiale and Germany’s Deutsche Airbus, it delivered its first aircraft, the A300, in 1972. In 2000 the parent firms merged into the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS), renamed Airbus Group in 2014 and Airbus SE in 2017. Legally registered in Leiden, the Netherlands, with its main office in Blagnac, France, Airbus also runs Defence and Space and Helicopters divisions.
Airbus Logo Meaning and History
The Airbus logo is an elegant, confident wordmark reflecting the precision and scale of modern aviation. The early Airbus Industrie identity featured a stylized turbine symbol — redolent of a jet engine — paired with an italic wordmark, directly linking the brand to the power of flight. As the company matured from a European consortium into a unified corporation, the logo became cleaner and more refined, emphasizing engineering excellence over literal aircraft imagery.
Airbus Logo Evolution
- 1970 — Airbus Industrie is founded with a stylized turbine emblem and an italic wordmark similar to Helvetica Black.
- 1986 — Updated with a bolder Helvetica Black Italic wordmark as Airbus becomes a serious Boeing competitor.
- 2000 — With the creation of EADS, the Airbus identity sits within a new corporate structure.
- 2010 — A redesigned wordmark debuts in a custom typeface, dropping the “AN EADS COMPANY” byline in 2014.
- 2017 — Airbus SE is formed and a single, unified Airbus brand rolls out across all divisions.
